Oswego Yacht Club
Located at the Oswego International Marina, Oswego Yacht Club is an all volunteer club.
The club was first established in 1881 by John T. Mott and then incorporated in 1883.
This makes it the oldest yacht club on this side of Lake Ontario. Sailing was a very
popular pastime during the late 19th century. As a result of the Great Depression the
club took a turn for the worse and became dormant for many years. Currently though the
club is thriving. It has members from all over NY. They host three invitational regattas
every summer and other social events throughout the year. Every June the club hosts the
Oswego County Hospice Regatta which raises money for Oswego County Hospice. Membership
is open to anyone who enjoys or is interested in boating. Oswego Yacht Club was one of
the founding members of the Lake Yacht Racing Association (LYRA). In 2012, the prestigious
LYRA Regatta was hosted in Oswego for the first time since 1928.
The club was built in two stages. First the main center part started in 1914 and went on for
five years. This part of the building is a one-story Art & Crafts style building. It also has
a walkout basement in the back of it. This section of the building was designed by architect
Claude Fayette Bragdon. The second stage was done by NY State. This stage includes the east
and west wings of the building. These additional structures were built between 1949 and 1950.
For some time, the wings were occupied as the NY State Naval Militia Armory and US Naval Reserve
Training Center. Later in 1978, the building itself was bought by the city of Oswego.
